Sheffield
As there are more partnerships in Sheffield than in the other three areas of South Yorkshire, the City has two Competition Managers working within the partnerships, the Senior Competition Manager, Lisa Wright, and Nicola Race. The Sheffield Competition Manager team is working as an integral part of all 4 of the School Sports Partnerships alongside the 4 Partnership Development Managers (PDM's) and School Sports Co-Ordinators (SSCO's) to increase the inter school competitive opportunities at family and partnership level leading to a City final in a variety of sports. Due to the size of the city, the two Competition Managers are working with two School Sports Partnerships to strategically align competition and increase participation. Lisa Nicola Sheffields Priorities for School CompetitionThe Sheffield Competition Managers have worked with the 4 PDM's to identify priorities for inter school competition across the City. Focus will be particularly placed on developing opportunities for younger pupils, particularly those at Key Stage 1 age, in the form of multi skills festivals and fun events. The lower Key Stage 2 age group (years 3 & 4) will also be prioritised, as well as secondary school age groups. Opportunities will be provided for children in these age groups to take part in competitions in a variety of sports particularly those focus sports highlighted above, as well other sports which are strong across Sheffield including Basketball, Dance, Orienteering and Gymnastics. Young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) are also a priority for the partnerships in Sheffield as there are a significant number of Special Schools in the city, which are all looked after by the Links School Sports Partnership. There are currently a lot of opportunities available for SEN children to take part in inter school competition and the competition managers will therefore work on progression pathways from these competitions and talent identification for those gifted young people. The city is also developing a strong leadership academy for young people who demonstrate particularly high skills in leadership to become part of, and those young people in these academies will become an integral part of the competition structure, assisting at events and competitions across the City.
I am Lisa Wright, the Senior Competition Manager for South Yorkshire. My job is to strategically oversee the inter-schools competition structure for the County, working with the team of Competition Managers in each area. However, as there are 4 School Sports Partnerships in Sheffield I also have a remit of Competition Manager for Sheffield along with Nicola. I am originally from Manchester and after 4 years of studying a degree in Sports Science for 3 years and a Masters degree for a year in Liverpool, I worked for a year in a gym in Manchester before taking up a Sports Development job in Selby in North Yorkshire. I have now settled in Yorkshire and have been in the post of Senior Competition Manager since April 2008. My sport is Shotokan Karate and I have achieved my 3rd Dan Black Belt after training for 20+ years. I have also previously played Volleyball and achieved a high standard at junior level, representing my County and being selected for the junior national squad. I am hoping I can use my experiences in my own youth sport and the opportunities I have been given to ensure that other young people across South Yorkshire are lucky enough to have the opportunity to reach their potential in their chosen sport. T: 07507 883406 Nicola Race I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in 2005, with a BSc in Sports Development and Coaching. For the past 2 years I worked at Berkshire Sport as the Sports Leadership and Volunteering Officer. My main roles included developing the Step into Sport Programme, increasing awareness of sports volunteering and making links with Volunteer Centres. I am glad to be back working and living in Sheffield, and I hope that my previous experiences will compliment my role as the Competition Manager for Sheffield. T: 07507 883493 |
