Rugby Union

National Priorities

The Rugby Union Framework aims to develop competitive opportunities for as wide range of abilities and stages of development as possible. The focus of the framework is away from the traditional well-established Rugby playing schools and towards to those schools looking to develop their Rugby Union activity either inside of outside curriculum time.

Rugby Football Union will be working towards five key principles; Club Links, Flexibility, Coaching and Competition, Inclusion/ Girls/ Boys and RFU Support

Key Focus

KS3  More regular and appropriate competitive opportunities at Y7 to Y9
KS4  New competitions for participation and (new and emerging) at Y10 and 16+
Girls  Consolidate new age banding of U15 (Y8-10) and U18 (Y11+) and transition competitions at Y7
Disability  Structured framework to be applied locally which brings together current work into one pathway.

South Yorkshire's plan for Rugby Union

Secondary School age has been highlighted as a priority area for the RFU. Rugby Union has a clear competition pathway at secondary school level, progressing through to the National Schools Partnership Series competition (previously the Emerging Schools Competition).

For boys Rugby, fixtures will be set for each age group within each area across the County (South Yorkshire) competition, all of which (each age group from year 7 to 11) take place in March. The winning team from this County final will qualify for the Regional (Yorkshire) National Schools Partnership final.

As with the Rugby League, the development of central venues leagues has been suggested to replace the merit league in Sheffield and Barnsley, allowing more young people to have the opportunity to take part in competitive Rugby on a more frequent basis. Additionally, in Barnsley leisure floodlit Rugby competitions will run for years 7, 8 & 9.

In Doncaster the professional club, Doncaster Knights, have gained funding to deliver coaching in Secondary schools on the proviso that schools will attend a competition. This will ensure that all schools identified as a ‘Rugby Union’ school will receive coaching and will be involved in some form of competition in the sport.

In Rotherham a regular league runs which is organised by the schools itself.

Another priority area identified by the RFU has been Girls Rugby and the RFU will run two girls’ Roadshows leading to the girls National Schools Partnership Series competition.
