National Priorities

The South Yorkshire Competition Manager Team has been working closely with the National Governing Body for Cricket, the English Cricket Board (ECB), to develop the National Competition structure within schools and across School Sports Partnerships.

ECB is committed to working locally to provide a high quality and fully integrated development programme for young people based around strategically identified Focus Club Community Clusters. High quality competitive opportunities will be delivered alongside complementary coaching programmes both in the School and Club environment that offer children an appropriate and high quality experience with clear routes into Club programmes and the wider Player Development Pathway. ECB will be investing in the workforce and, where appropriate, the facility requirements within this network to ensure a fully integrated package is offered to school aged children.
To deliver this, ECB is wholly committed to working within and through the Delivery System. Integrated planning, investment and delivery with other agencies and programmes is a central theme to ECBs work and a clear focus in the delivery of the Competition Framework’.
ECB’s Competition Framework focuses on 7 school based competitions: -

ASDA Girls Kwik Cricket Tournament
ASDA Mixed Year 5 Kwik Cricket Tournament
ASDA Mixed Year 6 Kwik Cricket Tournament
Natwest Indoor/Outdoor Inter Cricket Competitions
Daily Telegraph U15 Twenty20 Competition
Lady Taverners U13 Girls Indoor Schools Competition
Lady Taverners U15 Girls Indoor Schools Competition

Whilst each Competition is structured differently they are all broadly structured around :

Local District/SSP based Festival
Winners go forward to a County/Regional/National Finals

ECB’s two key School aged formats are Kwik Cricket and Inter Cricket. ECB recognises the finite capacity of School Sports Partnerships and asks that this is reflected in their local negotiations and specific local priorities identified. ECB does not have a national priority age group or competition as it sees meeting local need of utmost importance and where value can really be added.

South Yorkshire's plan for Cricket

Within each region, except Wales, there is a Regional Development Manager, plus a series of Cricket Development Managers and Officers in each of the separate Counties. The various development staff are available to provide help and advice to you on all aspects of cricket.

The South Yorkshire Competition Manager Team and the South Yorkshire Cricket Development Manager (CDM), Gareth Davis, are working locally across the County in order to identify and meet the needs of school children locally.

There is a consistent competition structure in place for Cricket across South Yorkshire at primary school (Key stage 2) age. The development pathways are in place for the children who take part in the National ASDA Kwik Cricket festivals as the winners from each school sports partnership competition will take part in a City final, which takes place at a central venue site. These festivals are run for year 5 & 6 children and the winning team will be the competing team in the Yorkshire finals, which take place at Headingley Stadium.

The South Yorkshire Competition Manager team and the CDM have identified two areas have been identified for development for Cricket competition and development for young people across the County. The first of which is the separation of the girls’ and boys’ competitions to run them as two separate events. This will increase the number of girls playing Cricket at festival level, particularly in the year 5 age group.

The second area for development identified has been at the Secondary School age, particularly years 7 & 8 (under 13’s). The idea put forward has been to develop Inter-Cricket at year 7 and 8 to ensure progression from primary school to secondary school. This can be played anywhere with a sports hall so all secondary schools will be able to be involved in inter-cricket. The idea would be to roll out inter cricket across all the partnerships within South Yorkshire to ensure progression from primary to secondary and then through at secondary school. This would enable young players to continue playing from primary school at a level which is achievable for them. Development of a competition structure will take place which is similar to the Kwik Cricket competition structure in which the winners of partnership and area competitions are selected to represent the County at the Regional competition which takes place in March.
