AthleticsNational PrioritiesAthletics is a complex sport with many disciplines in addition to 15 track and field disciplines,(including combined events) athletics also covers cross country running, race walking, road racing, and mountain and fell running. Athletics is one of 22 sports that have compiled a National Competition Framework. This athletics framework reflects an approach to competition which encourages fun activity and development of the key skills of running, jumping and throwing. The framework encourages children with wide-ranging skills, abilities and disabilities to enjoy competing together. Sportshalls exciting format for the Primary age group provides many children with their first competitive experiences. Large numbers of young people may compete within the safe confines of a typical secondary school facility and, with the innovative Sportshall events for this age group, an eventful and memorable day is ensured for all. The English Schools Athletics Association (ESAA) is responsible for the competition structure for track and field Athletics and Cross Country. There are two main competitions, the English Schools Athletics Championships and the English Schools Cup Competition.
Under 11 Sportshall organised by SSPs (County final run by Sportshall Associates) South Yorkshires plan for AthleticsThe priority identified locally for South Yorkshire is to develop Sportshall Athletics at the under 11, under 13 and under 15 age groups as a lead into track and field outdoor athletics, as well the provision of athletics competitions for young people with physical disabilities. As part of the 09-10 Playground to Podium scheme, the South Yorkshire competition manager team have funding to deliver competitions for young people with disabilities and athletics has been selected as one of the sports to be delivered. Those children invited to take part in this competition will be young people predominantly with physical disabilities from mainstream schools. The aim will be to engage young people with disabilities in a competitive experience which they may not have had the opportunity to take part in previously and to provide exit routes from the competition into clubs and development pathways for those identified as being gifted and talented. At primary school level the U11s SHA programme involves cluster competitions leading into partnership finals, with each winner from the partnership finals competing in a South Yorkshire County final. The competition managers are working with key partners to develop a similar structure for sportshall/indoor athletics at secondary, particularly in the identified u13’s age group, developing a clear transition from primary to secondary sportshall athletics. This already exists in some areas of South Yorkshire but not others so the team are working together with sportshall associates to develop the same structure to the same timescales in every area. The programme will involve area competitions leading into a South Yorkshire county final for both girls and boys.
